1989 was less than meets the eye in a lot of ways for Transformer newspaper ads. The majority of what I've found is Micromasters while multiple entire assortments of Transformers from 1989 have eluded me. I haven't found ads for the Classic Pretenders or Ultra Pretenders. Toys R Us, Children's Palace, K-Mart and a few other major retail chains continued to advertise Transformers so the drop in volume of ads is probably reflective of their attitudes towards the popularity of the line and ideas of what assortments would sell. Pretenders were very different from anything else in the action figure market at the time and could not be seen as being similar to other popular toy trends like the Micromasters could. It is also quite possible that ads for the rest of the '89 line are abundant in certain areas of the country and I just have not come across these yet.

Not many assortments were advertised and there were only a small number of stores, but they were all selling the same figures so I can estimate with some certainty that Micromaster Patrols cost $4.99, Micromaster Transports were $5.99, Micromaster Battle Stations were usually $8.99, Micromaster Bases averaged $11.99, the Micromaster Decepticon Space Shuttle was $17.99 and the Micromaster Autobot Rocket Base was $29.99. Of course all these are my unscientific estimates from a very small sampling of data and shouldn't be considered absolute or manufacturer's suggested retail.
